Australian- Iranian Community Organisation stands with Dr Helen Haines, a champion of human rights, refugees and the environment

The Australian-Iranian Community Organisation (AICO) is deeply saddened and concerned by the serious injuries sustained by Dr Helen Haines, the independent Federal Member for Indi in Victoria, in an incident described by the Prime Minister as a deliberate attack.

We condemn all violence and intimidation against elected representatives and wish Dr Haines a full and speedy recovery.

Dr Haines has been a strong voice for human dignity snd refugee rights. We commend her advocacy for the humane treatment of asylum seekers and the protection of their legal rights, alongside her commitment to environmental protection, climate awareness and clean energy.

For the Iranian-Australian community, her clear condemnation of human rights abuses and the repression of the Iranian people by the Islamic Republic of Iran carries particular significance. Her support for the Iranian people’s aspirations for freedom, and her opposition to the crackdown on protesters, demonstrate a commitment to human rights that extends beyond national borders.

We particularly acknowledge her decision in February 2023 to undertake the political sponsorship of three Iranian prisoners—Kambiz Kharout, Arshia Takdastan and Mehdi Mohammadi-Fard—who were then facing execution. Her calls for their death sentences to be overturned and for their release demonstrated practical solidarity with those seeking freedom and resisting oppression.

AICO calls on Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation to examine all possible motives and connections through a thorough and independent investigation, taking into account Dr Haines’ public advocacy in support of the Iranian people.

Our thoughts are with Dr Haines, her family, colleagues and loved ones at this difficult time. We thank the emergency responders, medical staff, and members of the public who came to her aid.

Our community deeply values her support for the rights and freedoms of the Iranian people. We hope to see her recover fully and resume her valued service to the community.
